The Problem with Synthetic Fragrances (And What We Use Instead)
The Problem with Synthetic Fragrances (And What We Use Instead)

You've probably noticed that walking through certain shops or sitting next to someone wearing a popular commercial fragrance can give you an instant headache. That reaction isn't a coincidence, and it isn't weakness. It's your body responding to a cocktail of synthetic chemicals that were never designed to be safe — just cheap and long-lasting.
What Is 'Fragrance' on an Ingredients Label?
When you see the word 'fragrance' or 'parfum' on a cosmetics label, it is a legal catch-all term that can represent a blend of hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Manufacturers are not required to list the individual components of a fragrance mixture — it's protected as a trade secret.
This means a product labelled as having 'natural fragrance' could contain synthetic musks, phthalates, benzene derivatives, and other compounds that have been linked to hormone disruption, skin sensitisation, and neurological effects.
The Specific Concerns
Three categories of synthetic fragrance ingredients deserve particular attention:
• Phthalates — Used as solvents and fixatives to make fragrance last longer. Classified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the body's hormone signalling.
• Synthetic musks — Petrochemical-derived compounds used to create the base notes in most commercial perfumes. Some have been shown to accumulate in human tissue.
• Benzene derivatives — Present in many synthetic fragrance blends. Benzene is a known carcinogen.
The compounding effect is significant. Most people are exposed to synthetic fragrances through their deodorant, perfume, body lotion, shampoo, and laundry detergent simultaneously — every single day.
Why Oil-Based Natural Perfume Is Different
Real Ones Brand perfumes are made with two ingredients: fractionated coconut oil and pure essential oils. That is the entire formula.
Fractionated coconut oil is a lightweight, odourless carrier that absorbs beautifully into the skin without a greasy residue. It also means our perfumes don't evaporate quickly the way alcohol-based fragrances do — the scent develops on your skin throughout the day, becoming richer as it warms.
Essential oils provide the fragrance profile — complex, layered, and genuinely distinctive. Unlike synthetic versions, essential oils have their own biological properties. Many are naturally antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, or calming, meaning your perfume is actively working with your skin rather than sitting on top of it.
What Our Customers Notice
The most common feedback we receive is that people around them notice the scent without being overwhelmed by it. Commercial fragrances tend to project aggressively and then disappear. Real Ones perfumes linger close to the skin, staying present throughout the day without filling the room.
Customers also report far fewer headaches, less skin irritation, and no sensitivity reactions — even from people who had previously written off perfume entirely because of bad experiences with conventional products.
Our Perfume Range
We currently offer women's and men's fragrances, available as full bottles and as a tester set of four 3ml vials — so you can find your signature scent before committing. Every product contains nothing but coconut oil and essential oils. No hidden chemicals. No synthetic fragrance oils. No exceptions.
Your skin and your hormones will thank you.
